Greater Palatine Area Democrats is commemorating Juneteenth with a screening of the documentary "13th," a film exploring the legacy of racism in U.S. history. The title refers to the Thirteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery.
Juneteenth is a holiday marking June 19, 1865, when federal troops that had arrived in Galveston, Texas, informed the enslaved people there that they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, signed two and a half years earlier.
