Some of the 2,600 Federal Programs the Republicans Want to Defund

One week after Inauguration Day, the Republicans who control our federal government announced they were stopping ("pausing") federal funding for 2,600 federal programs that help help children, seniors, the needy, veterans, medical research, mental health, the disabled, and basically everything that is paid for with our tax money. Our taxes belong to The People, but the Republicans who control our federal government appear to be making a major money grab. The New York Times (I know, I know) has an interactive listing of every program Republicans are targeting so you can learn more about each program. Here are some --some!-- of the programs Republicans want to cut:

  • Bullet-Proof Vest Program--$24 million
  • Anti-terrorism Emergency Reserve--$50 million
  • Body-Cam Policing Implementation--$9 million
  • Children Exposed to Violence program--$9 million
  • Community Based Violence Prevention programs -- $137 million combined
  • Grants to Reduce Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Stalking on Campus--$22 million
  • STOP School Violence -- $37 million
  • Transitional Housing for Victims of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Stalking or Sexual Assault--$42 million
  • National School Lunches--$17.4 billion with a "B"
  • Special Supplemental Nutrition Programs for Women, Infants and Children--$7.8 billion
  • Special Education Grants for Infants and Families--$540 million
  • Federal Work/Study programs-- $1.2 billion
  • Federal Direct Student Loans--$164.8 billion
  • Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities Prevention and Surveillance -- $63 million
  • Medical Assistance Program -- Medicaid--$689.6 billion
  • Autism Research -- two programs, $59 million combined
  • Cancer biology Research -- $891 million
  • Cancer Cause and Prevention-- $725 million
  • Cancer Centers Support Grants $604 million
  • Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research -- $468 million
  • Cancer Treatment Research -- $872 million
  • Veterans' Affairs: Suicide Mortality Review Cooperative Agreements $4 million
  • Automobile Adaptive Equipment for Certain Disabled Veterans and Members of the Armed Forces--$143 million
  • Burial Expenses Allowances for Veterans -- $352 million
  • VA Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Payments -- $258 million

And it goes on and on. Maybe the Republicans will be stopped by the courts. Or maybe they will be successful in inflicting more pain on the American people. What can we do? Right now, we can make sure the Republican chaos and destruction in the federal government stays out of our local government by voting in the April 1 local elections and helping local campaigns this spring.
